COMCOMLY AND INDIAN BURIAL CANOE


This memorial to Chinook nation Chief Comcomly is found near the Astoria Column. The memorial, in the form of an Indian burial canoe, was dedicated by the chief’s descendants in 1961, as part of Astoria’s 150th anniversary. Chief Comcomly was a renowned leader of his nation and known by Lewis & Clark. He received medals from Lewis & Clark due to the assistance he provided to the expedition. Comcomly died from a fever as part of an epidemic that struck his tribe in 1830.
